About Me
In case you're wondering, my name Htet Gyaw is pronounced "tet jaw". I'm a Burmese-American filmmaker and photographer based in New York. Growing up in Burma, stories of my father's armed resistance against the military dictatorship inspires my work to this day. In both documentary and narrative work, I strive to seek out an uncommon angle to find the core of each character's theme. With a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, I learned various crafts from illustration to screenwriting, which still informs my storytelling. Some of my collaborations include work with i-D, Ogilvy, Peloton, UPS, Lay's, Aetna, Yahoo!, CBS, Dow Jones, VHTS, and 823.
I believe every story is worth telling if told truthfully and deeply. When I arrived in the U.S. at the age of nine, I didn't see much representation for people of my background. So the story of the third-world immigrant or the Asian-American is something I focus on in my personal work. Thanks for reading and feel free to reach out if you think we'd work well together.
